Warm greetings from the Department of English, Faculty of Science and Humanities of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Vadapalani City campus. As an integral part of SRMIST’s expanding Faculty of Science and Humanities, Department of English hosts competent and highly qualified faculty members with commendable teaching and research experience. The Department was established in 2015 and offers a course in General English to the first year graduates of the Department of Commerce, Business Administration, Computer Science and Computer Applications. The course ensures the enrichment of communication skills through grammar and vocabulary sessions and through appreciation of literature, thereby providing the students with an all-round perspective of life as a whole. The course caters to the interest of students from all lingual and social background.
The Department works to enhance students’ creative literary skills through various activities like poetry writing, essay writing, extempore and other such in-house activities conducted in the classroom. The students are not only exposed to written forms of literary expression like poetry, essays, short stories and lectures but also to other popular genres like movies, music albums, short films and TEDX talks which exclusively deal with contemporary social and cultural issues. The Department ensures that learning through literature happens beyond the four walls of the classroom by letting the students explore a wide range of resources which trigger their social consciousness and aid in shaping them into responsible and knowledgeable individuals.
The Department also shares another important course with the Department of Career Development which caters to the job market demands of securing trainable fresh graduates in myriad spheres of commerce, business and technology. The English Department offers courses on Personality Development, Verbal Ability, Soft Skills and Interview readiness to all the first, second and third year students across all departments. The courses are frequently upgraded in line with the trend set by top corporates and aims to equip the students with the required skill sets that make them employable.
