Oasis English Literary Club and the Department of English, FSH, SRM IST, Vadapalani conducted a Scrabble Workshop for the students on 2 February 2024 at the Conference Hall in the EKT campus at 11 am.

The event began with Mr. James Raaj, Head, Department of English, FSH, SRM IST, Vadapalani, welcoming the gathering. He spoke about Scrabble and its uniqueness as it helped people in learning the English language. The Grandmaster Mr. Ranganatha Chakravarthy, founder of Madras Scrabble Foundation, was felicitated by the Head of the Department.

Mr. Chakravarthy enthusiastically asked the students to learn the knowledge-oriented game practically. Scrabble encourages the use of dictionaries as words are the core of this purposeful game. Every letter in the alphabet has a value. The letters with less number of
words have more value. Top to bottom, left to right are the mandatory arrangements of the words, with minimum two letters in the words. The winner is the scorer of maximum points. All the rules and regulations of the game were clearly explained by Mr. Chakravarthy. The Word Expert app was recommended by him. Mr. Ranganatha Chakravarthy with so much positivity and patience supported all the students to learn the game as easily as possible.

The Department of English, and English Literary Club “Oasis” conducted the special talk on Word and the World. The gathering was welcomed by the Head of the Department, Mr. James Raaj and presented a memento to the chief guest as a token of gratitude. The Chief Guest of the event Dr. P. Lalitha, Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of English, JBAS College for Women, Teynampet, Chennai was introduced by Ms. M. Harshini, Assistant Professor from the Department of English.

Dr. P. Lalitha gave a special talk on “Word and the World” to the gathering. She started the special talk by stating words have power. Further, she explained about the word with action.
She implied that action has an impact of one or few persons, whereas words have an impact of creating history in the world and it creates future. The purpose of the word will convey our thoughts, feelings and ideas. It inspires, educates, motivates and solves everyday challenges. Communications are made but not born. Finally, she concluded her talk by giving importance to the students to strengthen their power of learning words and to face the interview with the interviewer and the modern society.

Finally, the program winded up with a Vote of Thanks by Mr.K. Arul, Assistant Professor from the Department of English.

The Aura Theatre Club through the Department of English conducted Renaissance (Rebirth of an art) competition on 21 st December, 2023 at FSH, SRM IST, Ekattuthangal Campus. Students from different departments participated enthusiastically in the competition and had selected the art form of their choice and performed. 25 students participated in the competition. The competition enabled the performers to condense the scene in a single frame, which helped in demonstrating their performing skills. The event fostered a spirit of theatrical exploration and offered a platform for students to exhibit their performing talents. The competition not only celebrated performing skills but also encouraged students to express their ideas, creativity and performance in a condensed form. It also enhanced their speaking ability, improved their confidence, developed the quality of appreciating one another,
improved imaginary skills and helped them to learn and accept success and failure.

The Aura theatre club through the Department of English conducted the event of Poster Making on 25th October, 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal Campus to expose the student’s creative thinking and their insight knowledge to the society. Around 60 students from various departments of Vadapalani and Ekkatuthangal campus participated in the events. The judges of the competition gave the topics on the spot to the participants. For the event, the jury gave topics to the participants and they presented within the stipulated period of time. Finally, juries selected them on the basis of their timely presentation, and clarity of the content.

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted the event Logo Identification on 25th October 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal Campus. The Prime motto of the event Logo Identification is to find out the student’s talent like quick observation and their fair knowledge on the brand. Around 35 students from various departments of Vadapalani and Ekkatuthangal campus participated. The logos were displayed on the spot to the students. As a challenge, the participants prepared the list of the logos on viewing it on the spot. The juries shortlisted the contestants by counting the numbers and consumption of time used for identifying the logos. Finally, the results were announced by the jury on spot.

The Aura theatre club through the Department of English conducted the event of Dumb Charades on 25th October, 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal Campus to expose the student’s creative thinking and their insight knowledge to the society through this event. Around 30 students from various departments of Vadapalani and Ekkatuthangal campus participated in the event. The judges of the competition gave the topics on the spot to the participants. The three rounds for the event Dumb Charades were Dumb and Dumber, Blindfold Dumb Charades and Make it, don’t fake it.

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted the event Shipwreck on 25th October 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal Campus. The Prime motto of the event of Shipwreck and Logo Identification is to exhibit the student’s talent. Around 30 students from various departments of Vadapalani and Ekkatuthangal campus participated. The topics were given on the spot to the students. As a challenge, the participants prepared the content on the spot and expressed their knowledge to the audience and the jury. The juries shortlisted the contestants by conducting various levels of events and selected them on the basis of their bold and timely presentation, clarity of the content and body language. Finally, the results were announced by the jury on spot.

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted One Line Story Writing competition on 12 th October, 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani and Ekattuthangal Campus. Four topics were given, out of which students selected one of their choices and had written a one-line story. 84 students participated enthusiastically in the competition. The competition showcased the creative prowess of the students, as they condensed imaginative narratives into single lines, demonstrating their storytelling skills. The event fostered a spirit of literary exploration and offered a platform for students to exhibit their literary talents. The competition not only celebrated concise storytelling but also encouraged students to express their ideas and narratives in a condensed form.

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted debate competition under the topic Is Google an Online Patrol? on 15 th September, 2023 at FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani Campus. The objective of organizing debate was to hone the public speaking skills of the students and to provide an opportunity to express their opinions and ideas in an organized manner. 40 teams participated in Round 1. The best teams were selected for the second round based on the organization of thoughts, facts, arguments, presentation, and body language. The competition was judged by the faculty members of English Department. Students participated in an enthusiastic way. Overall, the competition was a resounding success, and all the participants were appreciated for their active participation, dedication and commitment to the art of debating.

The Department of English and the Department of Visual Communications in collaboration inaugurated Aura, The Theatre Club at FSH, SRM IST, Vadapalani on 30th August, 2023.

The Theatre Club’s Logo was revealed by Dr. K. R. Anantha Padmanaban, Dean, FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani. Aura, The Theatre Club’s song for the year was released which was sung by Aditya from the Department of Psychology.

 

The welcome address was proposed by Mr. James Raaj, Head, Department of English, FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani. Dean addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of theatre with various art forms. Mrs. Radhika, Assistant Professor, Department of English, proposed the Vision and Mission of the Theatre Club. Students from various departments performed different forms of theatre activities like group music, group dance, solo singing, solo dance, mime, tableau, movie scene recreation and ramp walk. The vote of thanks was rendered by Mr. Parthasarathy, Head, Department of Visual Communications, FSH SRM IST, Vadapalani.

Department of English of FSH, SRM IST, VDP campus inaugurated Oasis English Literary Club on 8th August, 2023. Mr. Abishek, podcaster, motivational speaker and sales consultant addressed the students by narrating three interesting stories. He began his speech by explaining a Marathi poem which touched his heart even as a child. Next, he moved on to talk about the novel The Old Man and the Sea written by Ernest Hemingway. He explained the philosophy of the novel. Then, he spoke about the drama Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare. Mr. Abishek addressed the most important philosophies of every human being like life, success, failure, trust and friendship. He inspired every student in the auditorium. Many students were thrilled to listen to his speech.

Literary programs were conducted as a part of the inauguration. A poem was enacted, three monologues were presented, a drama was enacted and a literary parade took place. All the acts were performed well with zest and zeal.

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted the final round of Elocution competition on 17th March, 2023 at SRM IST, FSH, Vadapalani & EKT campus. The Judge for the competition was Dr. C. S. Robinson, Professor, Research Department of English, St. Peter's Institute of Higher Education and Research. He spoke about the power of words and the history of the articulation of speech by the Greek scholars who focused on Mythos, Pathos and Logos. There were twelve competitors in total from all the campuses and shifts of SRM IST, FSH, Vadapalani. The judge declared three prizes and three consolation prizes. He also gave his suggestions and feedback for the delivery of speeches on stage. The judge also declared the six prizes for the Slogan Writing Competition conducted in the SRM IST, FSH, VDP and EKT campuses on 14th March, 2023.

 

 

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English, SRM IST, FSH,
Vadapalani successfully conducted a Slogan Writing competition at Vadapalani and EKT on 14th March, 2023. 21 students from VDP shift 1 and E&T, 28 students from VDP shift 2 and 14 students from EKT campus participated. Dr. C. S. Robinson, Professor, Research Department of English, St. Peter’s Institute of Higher Education and Research, judged and announced the winners for the competition.

 

Oasis English Literary Club through the Department of English conducted the Second round of Elocution competition on 27th February, 2023 at SRM IST, FSH, Vadapalani & EKT campus. There were twenty-four competitors in total from all the campuses and shifts of SRM IST, FSH, Vadapalani. The judges have selected twelve competitors for final round of the Oratorical Competition. They also gave suggestions and feedback for the delivery of speeches on stage.
