About Rotaract Club

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true “partners in service” and key members of the family of Rotary.

As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

ROTARACT CLUB OF SRM IST, VADAPALANI CAMPUS - INAUGRATION

The Rotaract club was inaugurated in the Vadapalani campus on the 31st of March, 2011. The sponsor club for SRM is “The Rotary club of Meenambakkam”. The president of RCM Mr. Ravindran is the mentor for the club.

The function was felicitated by the Director of the campus, Mr. M. Subramaniam in the presence of Mr. N. Illango, the Chief guest of honour.” He is the president of the Eye Association, Civic Exnora, Chennai. He is also a voice over artist who has won many prizes. The coordinators for the Rotaract club Mrs. B. Vijayalakshmi and Mr. Christopher Amaladass made sure that many events have been planned for the upcoming months.

Rotaract is a global organisation that empowers students and young professionals to create positive change in their local communities and around the world. Rotaract provides unique opportunities that assist its members in becoming the business and professional leaders of tomorrow. Sponsored by Rotary International, Rotaract Clubs across world are part of a worldwide organisation. Rotaract Club of SRM IST CSH Vadapalani Sponsored by Rotary club of Chennai Chola was chartered on 7th September 2021 with Rotractor Ashok Aravind as the Charter President and Rotractor Deekshaa as the Charter Secretary. As a charter club, Our club have successfully completed 52 projects in Club service, Community Service, Professional Service and International Service in the year 2021. We also received award for the best Professional service initiative – Project Men’s, Best Debutant club, Best Supporting President and for Supporting Faculty Coordinator – Dr.V.Prabhakaran.

How does it Works.!

All Rotaract efforts begin at the local, grassroots level, with members addressing their communities physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.

Rotaract in Chennai

The Rotary Club of Madras was inaugurated on 10th May 1929 and Chartered on 19th July 1929, making it the first Rotary Club in South India & erstwhile Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Rotary Club of Madras is the third oldest Club in India, after Calcutta and Bombay.

Rtn. James Wheeler Davidson, from Calgary, Canada, is credited with the formation of Rotary Club of Madras, while Rtn. C.G. Armstrong, Chairman, Madras Port Trust, was the first President. Rtn. Morton Chance, of the Hotel Chain, was the first Secretary. Rtn. Rajah Sir M.A. Muthiah and Rtn. Mohd. Usman were the first Indian Members of the Rotary Club of Madras.

Over the years, leading luminaries from various businesses, professions & vocations have been Members of the Rotary Club of Madras. Guided by the theme, “Service above Self”, the Club is credited with pioneering work in the area of eradicating Red Measels and with the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme, adopted by Rotary International.

Service Projects

The Community Service Projects of Rotary Club of Madras include :-

  • Rotary Nagar, since 1947.
  • Rural & Urban partnership at Sembakkam, 30 kms from Chennai.
  • Boys Town at Gummudipoondi and Selaiyur.
  • 3H Project for Rehabilitation of people already afflicted with Polio.
  • Rebuilding the lives of fishermen & their families, after the devastating Tsunami hit Sulerikattukuppam, near Mahabalipuram, during December 2006.
  • Periodic Medical Camps for less privileged sections of society.
  • Scholarships to deserving students.
  • Vocational training programmes at Boys Town.
  • Donation of medical equipment to hospitals.
  • Old age home at VHS Centre, Taramani, Chennai.
  • Mid – day meals scheme to nourish students from weaker sections of the community.
  • Thaneer Thaneer , project to renovate temple tanks and recharge ground water.
  • Today, the Club has 215 Members, who are distinguished citizens of Chennai and leaders in their chosen businesses/professions/vocations.
  • Eighteen illustrious Members from the Club have risen to the post of Governor of District 3230, including Rtn. PDG. Benjamin Cherian as the Centennial Governorduring 2004 – 05!.

Varungalam

The multiple community service project “Varungalam” jointly organized by, Rotaract club of SRM Rotaract Rotaract club of Akash, Rotaract club of D.G Vaishanav college, Rotaract club of Stella Maris and Rotaract club of Vivekananda college at Vada Madurai Village, near Periya Palayam, Red hills held on 18th of March turned out to be a successful one. Around 80 rotaractors volunteered for this event. 500 villagers were benefited by this project. Varungalam – a project with a blend of community service and professional service avenues.

It included projects such as:Eye checkup camp where around 80 elderly people were screened. 5 of them were provided with free cataract treatment thanks to Agarwal Eye Hospital who came forward to conduct the camp.

The eye check up camp was followed by the Blood check up cum blood donation camp conducted by LLMRF blood bank where around 50 villagers and 25 rotaractors volunteered to donate blood .

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness” considering it to be the vision for the World Rotaract week, we , the rotaractors took up the initiative to spread awareness amongst villagers by conducting street plays and awareness programs on waste management .The team from HINDU college and rotaractors from all five clubs did a splendid job by performing street plays and programs in creating awareness among people on emergency help line numbers, child labour, drug hazards, water management, blood donation, child marriage, eye donation, organ donation.

Literacy rate survey was conducted in the village and as it says Save nature for our Future we the rotaractor’s donated a sapling to each family in the village and asked them to raise the saplings.  Around 250 saplings were donated to the village people.

“All is well that ends well” as per the saying, all the Rotractors visited an orphanage near Madhavaram and distributed snacks to the children. The backbone behind this wonderful project, Rtr.BARATH ( Project Chairman-Varungalam) , Rtr.Praveen President of RC SRM (Project Secretary ),and Co- chairman’s Rtr.Ayush (secretary DG Vaishnav ) , Rtr. Naveen (vivekanada college),Rtr . Navitha (president SMC) played a vital role in executing this project successfully. It truly was a great experience working with such wonderful community service projects and all the rotaractors definitely are “CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES” with the rotaract movement.
